A REVIEW FROM PURCHASER -

Date: November 30, 2008

Finally a camcorder worth buying."

"I came across the HMX20C camera while searching for a replacement to my annoying Canon Z800. I got tired of the interlacing issues when doing video editing on a PC / Mac. This Samsung fits the bill.

"Progressive scan, not interlaced = fantastic quality on a computer. No more jaggy lines on moving objects. I can also bring the movie clips into Final Cut Express 3.5HD without any compatibility issues. The codec is recognizable.

"Slow motion mode on the HMX20C is cool, but I honestly wish it was at least 720x480 rez. Unfortunately its much smaller, and only 4:3 ratio. Its a cool feature, but I would vote for bigger size with a slower shutter speed if need be. I assume the small size is needed because the capture rate is 300fps. Maybe its too much data to handle.

"The cheaper version cameras that don't do HD, also have a time lapse mode. THAT would be great! I'm bummed this camera doesn't share that as well. (next firmware update, hint hint) The picture quality on this is fantastic. The HD looks great. I connect it via HDMI to my 42" philips 1080 set. Looks great. Even the SD resolution looks great for that matter. No hard drive, tape, or DVD. Good! Who needs them. SDHC cards are wonderful, just be sure your card reader can read them. Some cant, so you'll be forced to use the USB connection to get your video off the camera.

"Still Image capture on the HMX20C works well. The built in flash is nice. Its a good feature to have. Not having to carry around a point and shoot is nice when you have this camera already on you. The charging cradle is nice, but the ability to charge via the USB cable would have been a good idea. Who wants to bring a charging cradle with them on vacation. Now I have to find an external battery charger. One thing listed in the "full specs" is tripod screw = no. Its got one. There is a 1/4" threaded hole in the bottom for a tripod to be mounted."

Mic in = awesome! Yes, some of us do use these cameras to capture music and things where we need an external mic, or line in. Thank you Samsung for paying attention. Design and control layout are good. Fits my hand well. On screen controls are good too. 49mm threads for an extra lens is quite nice as well. My wide angle lens works great. (as long as i don't try zooming because my lens is a cheapy) Over all this camera is fantastic. I can only complain slightly. Usually about things I wish it had, not about what it does have. Nice job Samsung."

"SC-HMX20C is a well designed full HD camcorder. Unlike the recent Sony camcorder that use a hard disk, HMX20C has 8GB of internal memroy and also has an external memory card slot for SD card. In my experience, 8GB was enough to take video on a holiday picnic."
